Virginia Frances Kastl

Virginia Frances Kastl, age 85 of Mattoon, IL passed away Friday evening, March 10, 2023, at The Villas of Holly Brook in Charleston, IL, surrounded by loved ones. A Funeral Mass in her in honor will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 North 21st Street, Mattoon, IL 61938. The visitation will be held the same day from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. The committal service will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. Military Rites will be conducted by Mattoon VFW Post 4325. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services. Virginia was born on March 23, 1937, in Mattoon, IL to the late John W. and Loretta (Stuckey) Protz. Virginia married Richard A. Kastl on June 22,1957 in Mattoon, IL; he preceded her in death on May 21, 2007. She is survived by one son, Albert K. Kastl and wife Leeann of Mattoon, IL; one daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” A. Kastl of Charleston, IL; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; twelve great great-grandchildren; two brothers, John F. “Fred” Protz of Lerna, IL, Gerry L. Protz and wife Janet of Mattoon, IL; one sister, Alice J. Johnson of Allenville, IL; and one daughter-in-law, Donna M. Kastl of Charleston, IL. She is preceded in death by two sons, Bart, and Brett Kastl; one brother, William Protz; two sisters, Dorothy Theobald and Mary Weber. Virginia honorably served our country in the United States Navy from 1955 until 1957. She started her professional career as a former employee of GE and later retired from Ampad in Mattoon, IL after over twenty years of service in the labeling department. Virginia was affectionately coined the “Label Lady” from numerous coworkers. A devout member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Mattoon, IL Virginia proudly served as a Eucharistic Minister and member of Daughters of Isabella and Quilting Club. With her talent in arts and crafts, Virginia enjoyed cross-stitching, making many treasured homemade Christmas cards and other wonderful gifts throughout the years. An organization dear to her heart was the American Red Cross. She and her husband donated blood and platelets to help others greatly in need. Virginia received many awards from the organization for her selflessness and bountiful donations. Over the years, Virginia, her mother, and sisters would take annual vacations and shopping trips. Many memories were made and never a dull moment was had when she was with her family. She loved bowling with her sisters, flower gardening, and admiring hummingbirds. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many, Virginia will be lovingly remembered.
