Rachel “Rae” Irene Miller, age 99 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 11:23 pm, Monday, November 6, 2023, at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL with her children by her side. A funeral service in her honor will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 13, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, 10 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Pastor Matthew Froeschle will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, IL. The visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services. Rachel was born on June 19, 1924, to the late Charles F. and Charlotte M. (Vann) Espenlaub. She married Thomas E. Miller on May 31, 1947; he passed away on April 19, 2010. She is survived by one son, Jeffrey A. Miller and wife Alejandra of Aguascalientes, MX; one daughter, Judy R. Looby and husband John of Charleston, IL; four grandchildren: L. Nabil Bueno of Aguascalientes, MX, Lua S. Stump and husband Ryan of Aguascalientes, MX, Kimberly A. Looby of Charlotte, NC, Kevin T. Looby of San Mateo, CA,; five great-grandchildren: Danel and Keyla Stump, Luca, Kira and Heli Bueno. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Oscar, and Harold Espenlaub; and two sisters, Ruth Orth and Emma Jean Cox. Over the years, Rae was employed by Checkley Insurance, Rural King, and Columbian School as a bookkeeper. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mattoon, IL, served as an Elder and was a member of Sarah Circle. For more than forty years Rae generously volunteered her time at Mattoon Memorial Hospital and Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. A member of the Mattoon Golf and Country Club, she was passionate about golf and was the Women’s Club Champion. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, Bridge player, and especially loved socializing while playing cards. Kind, selfless, warm hearted, and nurturing are just a few characteristics of Rae. As a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
