Mary V. Phelps

Mary Virginia Hart Phelps, age 90, of Mattoon, passed away at 9:34 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2008 at Springfield Memorial Medical Center. \r\n\r\nThe funeral service in her honor will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jan Hawkins officiating. Interment will be in Zion Hill Cemetery, rural Mattoon. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home. \r\n\r\nMary was born October 19, 1917, in Paradise Township, the daughter of Ottis S. and Alma I. (Carlyle) Hart. She married Jesse M. Phelps on September 4, 1934. He passed away on March 18, 1991. She is survived by her daughter, Nancie Taylor and her husband Larry, of Springfield, IL; six grandchildren, Scott Johnson and his wife Adrienne, and their son Jaden, of Deerfield, IL, Trisha Chapman and her husband Wes of Mattoon, IL, Jennifer Landon and her husband Michael, and their children, Cory and Jason , of Franklin, IL, Julie Hall and her husband Eric , and their children, Victoria, Jonathon and Andrew of Montrose, IL, Kristin Shaughnessy and husband Mike of Springfield, IL, and Nate Slaughter of Springfield, IL; two sisters, Ednamae Campbell of Indian Head Park, IL, and Marjorie Clinton of Springfield, IL; a sister in law, Carolyn Hart of St. Louis Park, MN; one brother, Robert N. Hart and his wife Marilyn of Springfield, IL; and several special friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Judyth L. Johnson, two brothers, Miles Donald Hart and the Reverend Dr. Jack Hart. \r\n\r\nMrs. Phelps was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mattoon where she served as an Elder, past president of the Women's Association, a member of the Rachel Circle, and served many years of dedication to many areas of the church.
