Jerry L. Hastings\r\n\r\nDr. Jerry L. Hastings, 73 of Mattoon, passed away at 9:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 8th at Lee Memorial Medical Center in Ft. Myers, FL. \r\n\r\nFuneral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13th at the First United Methodist Church in Mattoon with Reverend Dr. James D. Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in Dodge Grove cemetery in Mattoon. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon. \r\n\r\nHe was born on January 13, 1935 in Decatur, the son of Lawrence and Maxine Smart Hastings. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Craft, on June 25, 1955 in Elwin, IL and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dr. Brian (Wendy) Hastings and Barry Hastings both of Mattoon, IL; two daughters, Lana (Phil) Piercy of Normal and Becky (Mark) Styninger of Nashville, IL. He was a proud grandpa of Ryan, Myles and Blake Hastings of Mattoon, IL; Michael Modos, Christopher Modos and Lauren Piercy of Normal, IL; and Brock, Bryce and Bridget Styninger of Nashville, IL. He leaves three sisters, Joan Hoyt of Litetz, PA, Jean Honeyman of Springfield, IL and Judy (Bill) Lovins of Springfield, MO; a brother in law, Carl (Joyce) Craft of Elwin; and sister in law; Glenda (Phil) Owens of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews.\r\n\r\nJerry graduated valedictorian of his Macon High School class of 1953. He received a basketball scholarship to Millikin University in Decatur where he graduated in 1957. He then taught math and coached basketball at Moweaqua High School. In 1962 he enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis where received his Doctorate of Dentistry degree. \r\n\r\nHe opened his dental practice in Mattoon in 1966 where he was still practicing. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mattoon where he served on numerous committees, a member and past president of the Mattoon Kiwanis club, 6 year member and past president of the Mattoon School Board of Education, member of the American Dental Association and past president of the Eastern Illinois Dental Society. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Mattoon Green Wave, St. Louis Cardinals and University of Illinois Baseball. Above all else, Jerry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
