Ivan Thomas "Tom" Snowden

Mattoon, IL - Ivan Thomas 'Tom' Snowden, Jr., age 96, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 4:20 a.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at Mattoon Health Care Center.\r\n \r\nThe funeral mass in his honor will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 21, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Stephen Sotiroff officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mattoon VFW Post 4325. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. \r\n\r\nBorn March 17, 1918, in Mattoon, IL, Ivan was the son of Ivan T. and Catherine (Connell) Snowden. He married Mary Eileen Churchman on April 24, 1948, in Mattoon, IL. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2004. Survivors include their children, Dr. Ivan Thomas Snowden III and wife Marianne of Charleston, IL, John Douglas Snowden and wife Brenda of Sneedville, TN, William Joseph Snowden and wife Sandy of Mattoon, IL, Dr. Richard Michael Snowden and wife Elizabeth of Mattoon, IL, Robert Lee Snowden and wife Jean of Mattoon, IL, and David Matthew Snowden and wife Kim of Mattoon, IL; two sisters, Kathleen Steward of Chicago, IL, and Ruth Snowden of Mattoon, IL; fourteen grandchildren, Angie Jordan of Mattoon, IL, Sean Snowden of Boston, MA, Jonathan Snowden of Ozark, AL, Amanda 'Mandy' Snowden of Mattoon, IL, Tony Mathias of Cooks Mills, IL, Toby Snowden of San Francisco, CA, Andy Snowden of Nashville, TN, Brian Snowden of Mattoon, IL, Alexandra Snowden of Mattoon, IL, Ryan Snowden of Champaign, IL, Patric Snowden of Mattoon, IL, Ian Snowden of Mattoon, IL, Brendan Snowden of New York City, NY, and Bart Snowden of Denver, CO; and fourteen great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Edward J. Snowden. \r\n\r\nMr. Snowden served our country with the United States Army as a paratrooper, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant and was a Jump School Instructor at Ft. Benning, GA. He was a lifelong farmer, however, while farming he had also been employed by the Secretary of State as a license investigator and then later served as Deputy Sherriff of Coles County. \r\n\r\nTom was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon, IL.
