Wax, age 90, of Mattoon, IL, formerly of Sidell, IL, passed away at 10:10 p.m., on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at Mattoon Health Care Center.\r\nThe funeral service in her honor will begin at 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 21, 2010, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938, with Reverend Ken Hutchins officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Sidell, IL. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.\r\nMrs. Wax was born in Broadlands, IL, on May 24, 1920, the daughter of Ora E. and Lutie B. (Darnall) Timmons. She married Cletus C. Wax in Sidell, IL, on August 9, 1941. He passed away January 12, 2005. Survivors include their daughters, Sandra Gourley and husband Eldon of Mattoon, IL, and Norma Hoag and husband Terry of Columbus, OH; five grandchildren: Robyn Wolters and husband Mike of Dallas, TX, Kara Jo Johnston and husband Jeff of Decatur, IL, Paula Jean Pellegrino and husband Andy, of Pittsburgh, PA, Thad Gourley of Rockford, IL, and Christopher Hoag of Columbus, OH; and 16 great-grandchildren: Alec Johnston, serving with the United States Marine Corp; and Hannah, Nathan, and Madison Johnston, all of Decatur, IL; Jessica Cohlmeyer of Pittsburgh, Pa; Austin Wolters and Whitney Wolters of Dallas, TX; Hayley, Hayden, Hannah, and Harrison Hoag , all of McKinney, TX; Samuel, Charlie, and Ali Pellegrino of Pittsburgh, PA; and Max and Lauryn Gourley of Roscoe, IL. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by both parents, and two brothers, Harold and Gene.\r\nHilma graduated from the Sullivan Academy of Beauty in Chicago, IL, where she worked in a salon on the outer drive. She later owned and operated Hilma's Beauty salon in Sidell, IL. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mattoon, IL, where she was a member of Mary's Circle, First United Methodist Women, and had been active in many Bible study groups over the years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. \r\nHilma was an avid gardener and enjoyed making greeting cards for friends and family with her flowers. She loved to read and do needle work and was an excellent Chinese Checker player. She had abundant enthusiasm for life and looked forward to each new day.
