Harold E. Dobbs

Harold E. Dobbs, age 82 of Sullivan, IL, passed away Monday, June 2,2025 at his residence. A funeral service in his honor will be held at noon, Friday, June 6, 2025, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL; Reverend Joy Starwalt will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow in Mt. Zion General Baptist Cemetery in North Okaw Township. Military Rites will be conducted by the Mattoon American Legion Post 88. The visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Harold was born on September 30, 1942, in Neoga, Il to the late Chester W. and Minnie J. (Kingery) Dobbs. He married Cheryl L. Bingaman on August 29,1998 at Mt. Zion General Baptist Church in North Okaw Township. He is survived by his children: Elizabeth Guess of Charleston, IL, Thomas Dobbs and wife Carol of Mattoon, IL, Victoria Dobbs of Tremont, IL, Shane Rueff of Mattoon, IL, Tawn Rueff of Mattoon, IL; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Alvis Dobbs and wife Barb of Sullivan, IL, and Jack Dobbs of Farina, IL. He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica Guess. Harold served our country in United States Army Special Forces 1st Brigade Combat Team, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1965. Harold was a proud iron worker, dedicating many years of hard work and skilled craftsmanship to Iron Local Union 380 in Urbana, IL. He was actively involved in his community, where he was a respected member of the Mattoon American Legion Post 88, National Hot Rod Associate (NHRA), and the Patriots. He was a true enthusiast of motorsports racing, outdoorsman, and avid fan of the rodeo. His fascination with auctions led to a unique collection of trinkets, each with its own story and a special place in Harold's heart. His collection was a testament to diverse interests and a knack for finding treasure in the most unexpected places. In every aspect of his life, Harold embodied the life of a remarkable and very loved man. He was selfless, generous, and thoughtful.
