Anthony Howard Campbell

Anthony Howard Campbell, age 57 of Neoga, IL formerly of Chicago, IL passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024, at his residence. A memorial service in his honor will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, October 18, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Reverend Ron Dickinson will officiate. Anthony was born on March 2, 1967, in Rolla, North Dakota to Howard P. and Ida Mae (Verville) Campbell. He married Diana Rose Szumlas on January 28, 2002, in Barbados; she survives and resides in Neoga, IL. He is also survived by his mother, Ida Mae Campbell of Minnesota; two brothers, Jim Campbell and wife Betty of Minnesota, and Robert Campbell; three sisters, Linda Jackson of Minnesota, Deb Jacobs and husband Brian of North Dakota, Rhoda Scarpella and husband Jeff of Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews: Daniel Szumlas and wife Kristen of Vancouver, WA, David Szumlas and wife Lourdes of Glendora, CA, Christina Kast of Madison, WI, James Szumlas and wife Vanessa of Pinole, CA, Edward Szumlas and wife Jobi of Rockford, MI, and Eric Scumlas of Comstock, MI. He was preceded in death by his father. Anthony was a proud veteran of the United States Army and specialized as a Military Police officer. Following his honorable discharge, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. With a dedication to serving his community and upholding the law, he served in the Tinley Park Police Department for twenty-eight years and retired as Commander in 2020. Throughout his career he expanded his knowledge through training and advanced through the ranks from Sergeant of Investigations to his final position as Commander. He earned the titles of expert marksman sniper, motorcycle officer, and master firearms instructor during that time. Living a life that was active and full of adventure, Anthony and his wife Diana traveled extensively within the United States and throughout the world which included many cruises. He also enjoyed motorcycle riding, boating, and hiking. He and Diana also shared a passion for animals as they were always a significant part of their lives. A man of great courage and strength, Anthony made a lasting impact on the community he loved and served. He will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and those whose lives he touched.
