Richard G. Schroeder, age 90, of Mattoon, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at his residence.\r\n\r\nFuneral services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Anne Jones officiating. Interment will be at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois, 61938.\r\n\r\nMr. Schroeder was born January 28, 1917, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of George and Esther (Strauss) Schroeder. He married Yvonne Smith on October 31, 1948 in Riverside, Illinois. They shared 59 years of marriage. She survives. \r\n\r\nIn addition to his loving wife, he is survived by their daughter, Lynn Blume and husband Doug of Mattoon; a sister Garnet Haldeman of Seabring, Florida; and 2 grandchildren, Cara Stine and her husband Dustin of Sandoval, Illinois, and Mark Blume of Mattoon; and 2 nieces Jan Barmore of Bonita, Florida, and Karren Kirk of Mahomet, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, William 'Bill' Schroeder; and 2 sons, Scott Schroeder in 1964, and Mark Schroeder in 1972. \r\n\r\nMr. Schroeder served our country with the Army as First Lieutenant for Field Artillery during World War II. He was trained to fly by the U.S. Air Force. He was a reconnoiter for the Field Artillery and flew the first reconnaissance plane over France after D-Day. He was honored with 2 Silver Stars and 3 Oak Leaf Cluster. \r\n\r\nRichard and his brother William 'Bill' Schroeder were co-owners of the IGA Grocery at the Good Neighbor Shopping Center. They later were co-owners of self-service laundromats. Richard then retired and became Clerk of the Court of Coles County where he served for 14 years.\r\n\r\nMr. Schroeder was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. His interests and artistic talents were varied and many. He enjoyed spending time with his Tuesday Breakfast Group of 35 years and the Tuesday ROMEO Club. Though he remained busy, he always made it a priority to devote time to his family. He cherished his family and was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and a proud grandfather. He enjoyed sharing life with his family and many friends and they will cherish the memories he leaves. \r\n\r\nMemorials may be made to the Coles County Humane Association, Mattoon Food Bank, or a charity of the donor's choice.
