Norman Claude Hatfill, age 89, passed away at 6:50 A.M., Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Copper Creek Cottages in Mattoon, IL. The funeral service in his honor will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Pastor Kevin Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow at Janesville Cemetery in Lerna, IL. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post # 4325 at the graveside. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home. Norman was born April 26, 1928 in Mattoon, IL, the son of Claude and Zella (Evans) Hatfill. He married Shirley A. Feeney on August 6, 1949 in Connersville, IN. He is survived by his two children; one son, Dr. Steven J. Hatfill and companion Peck Chegne of Washington, DC; one daughter, Debbie A. Sparks and husband Tony of Mattoon, IL; four grandchildren, Kamin Bode of Ocala, FL, Megan Sparks of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mindy Clapp and husband Nathan of Mattoon, IL, Melanie Sparks of Mattoon, IL; three great-grandchildren, Bill and Zachary Bode of Ocala, FL, Aubrey Clapp of Mattoon, IL, and one on the way; one brother, Larry Hatfill of Mattoon, IL; one sister, Juanita Bickel of Mattoon, IL; and special friend, Susan Raffa. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Vernon Hatfill, and sister Eleanor McConaha. Norm honorably served our country in the US NAVY during WWII as a Quartermaster on the USS Destroyer John W. Weeks. He was employed at Electric Laboratories and Sales for over thirty years where he was the first employee, Meter Tester, Sales Manager, General Manager, President, and Owner. He was involved in numerous community service organizations: Board of Directors of Mattoon Rotary Club, Board of Trustees President of First United Methodist Church, Board President of Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, and Board President of Mattoon Golf and Country Club. He also served on the Board of Directors for Mattoon Area Family YMCA and Coles County Health Association. Norm had a passion for raising, training, and racing Thoroughbred Horses. He was the owner of MEKAMY Oaks Horse Farm, named after his granddaughters, Megan, Kamin, and Mindy. He loved spending his time with his friends in Mattoon, IL and Ocala, FL. Norm enjoyed spending his time on the golf course, playing cards, having dinner and coffee with friends. He cherished his time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will leave a lasting impression with his loved ones and the community.
