Mavis H. Bagby

Mavis H. Bagby, age 87 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 8:04 AM, Friday, April 3, 2020 at Mattoon Health Care. A private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Mitchell- Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is assisting with arrangements. Mavis was born on April 2, 1933 in Grand Forks, ND the daughter of the late Roy N. and Verna A. (Steinbach) Hagen. She married Robert B. Bagby on June 17, 1960; he preceded her in death in 2012. Mavis is survived by her daughter, Mary Busbey; two sons, Robert Bagby and wife Kerry, Timothy Bagby and wife Debbie; four grandchildren, Karen (Austin) Verbeck, Meghan Bagby, Eric Busbey (Rachel), Ryan Bagby (Chrissy); four great-grandchildren, Jack Verbeck, Theo and Finn Bagby, and Noa Busbey. Mavis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mattoon, IL. She was a long-time primary school teacher at Harrison Elementary School in Wonder Lake, IL. She received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and certificate of advanced studies from Concordia University in River Forest, IL. Mavis was always a very giving person, donating her time and effort to church work in impoverished countries and local charities close to her heart. She loved going to watch her beloved Green Bay Packers play in stadiums across America and cheer on the Chicago Cubs.
