Martha C. Shafer

Martha C. Shafer, age 99, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2006 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Stephanie Johanpeter officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Martha C. Shafer was born December 19, 1906 at Pine Village, Indiana, a daughter of John T. and Lulu Warbritton Ritenour. She married Paul Ora Shafer February 14, 1930 at Bloomington, Indiana, he preceded her in death December 28, 1998. Survivors include her children, John Shafer and wife Theodora of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Jerry Shafer of Orlando, Florida and Thomas Shafer and wife Marta of Ottumwa, Iowa; and a son-in-law, Leroy Wetzel and wife Judy of Mattoon. She also leaves grandchildren, Peggy Kepp and husband Dr. Phillip of Mattoon, David Wetzel and wife Mary Ellen of Mattoon, Tamara Shafer of Erie, Colorado, John Paul Shafer and wife Teri of Broomfield, Colorado,Jamey Shafer of New York, New York and Andrew Shafer of Portland, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Brian and Rachel Kepp, Kasey and Beth Wetzel, Todd Baker, Jodi Dart, Anna and Avery Shafer, Joe and Sarah Mattingley, Liviya Harmon and Brock and Dalton Baker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Shafer and a daughter, Mary Wetzel. Martha was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Gleaner Sunday School Class. She served as church librarian for 25 years. She graduated from the Indiana State Normal School with a degree in education. She taught school in Ellettsville, Indiana and the Mattoon Area Adult Center. She was a member of Elect Lady Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Ladies Guild, Coles County Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women and served as secretary and treasurer of the University of Illinois Home Extension. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Library Fund.
