    Clyda Mae Schniers

    August 21, 1921 - August 16, 2015

    Mattoon, IL – Clyda Mae Schniers, age 93, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 10:10 p.m., Sunday, August 16, 2015, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. The funeral mass in her honor will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 20, 2015, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon, IL, with Father John Titus and Father Steve Arisman officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Rosary will begin at 4:45 p.m. Born August 21, 1921, in Windsor, IL, Clyda was the daughter of Clyde and Grace (Webb) Kirk. She married Raymond Schniers on October 9, 1943, in Mattoon, IL. He passed away in 1993. Survivors include two children: Cheryl Gilkerson and husband George of Glen Ellyn, IL, and Ed Schniers and wife Rosie of Charleston, IL; one brother, Richard Kirk and wife Norma Jean of Mattoon, IL; seven grandchildren: Erin Smith and husband Trey, Brian Schniers and wife Erin, Andrew Schniers and wife Lauren, Paul Gilkerson, Rachel Gilkerson, Amy Biggs and husband Kyle, and Thomas Schniers; and five great grandchildren: Bailey Smith, Ben Smith, Caleb Schniers, Nolan Schniers, and Natalie Schniers. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde J. Kirk; one sister, Vera Grace Knauss; two grandchildren, John Edward Schniers, Jr.; and Stephen Daniel Schniers; and one great granddaughter, Sadie Elizabeth Schniers. Mrs. Schniers was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon, IL. After earning her degree as a Registered Nurse in 1943 from Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN, she served eighteen years as the Head Emergency Room Nurse at Mattoon Memorial Hospital and then one year at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center before retiring in 1978. In her free time, Clyda loved to read and enjoyed studying history, especially World War II era. However, she treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, more than anything. Memorials in her honor may be made to Catholic Charities or the Mattoon Community Food Center.
