Virgil Allen Doty

Mattoon-Virgil Allen Doty, age 81, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:50 am on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center. \r\n\r\nThe funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, February, 7, 2007, at the Broadway Christian Church with Pastor Marvin Flowers and Pastor Kevin Wolfe officiating. Interment will be in Zion Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, Tuesday evening from 5:00-8:00 pm. \r\n\r\nVirgil was born August 26, 1925, in Lovington, IL, the son of Everett G. and Freda A. (Pifer) Doty. He married Erna L. White in Springfield, Tennessee on July 8, 1961. She survives. Other survivors include his four sons, Bruce Scott Doty and his wife Sharon of Mattoon, Dale A. Doty and his wife Sharolett of Mattoon, Michael E. Doty and his wife Diane of Strasburg, and Lynn K. Doty of Shelbyville; two daughters, Lisa Edwards of Mattoon, and Aveleah Kite and her husband Jim of Shelbyville; two stepchildren, Chris Keiser and her husband Paul of Naperville, and W. Michael Brown of St. Louis; two brothers, Bernard Doty and his wife Zona of Strasburg, and Roger Doty and his wife Patsy of Cincinnati, OH; and three sisters, Lois McGinness of Shelbyville, Naomi Capen of Reno, NV, and Rosalie Doty of Mattoon. He leaves 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one grandchild. \r\n\r\nMr. Doty was a retired employee of General Electric where he was employed as an electrician. He served our country with the United States Navy during World War II and during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Broadway Christian Church where he was active with the Highlighters Class and Three Strands Class and was considered a devoted student of the Bible. He was also involved with missionary work that included travel in both the U.S. and Mexico. \r\n\r\nIn his free time, he enjoyed spending time on his computer and traveling but more than anything, being with family and friends.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
