Violet "Vi" R. Hubbell

Violet “Vi” Rose Hubbell, age 81 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 10:10 AM, Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Palm Terrace in Mattoon, IL. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 3, 2023 at the Mattoon Public Library, 1600 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of arrangements. Violet was born on July 15, 1942, in Wisconsin, the only child of the late Albert K. and Ethel D. (Thiel) Ruplinger. She married William “Bill” Hubbell and later divorced. Vi earned her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She spent her entire career working with children and adolescents, in residential treatment centers and for many years in school districts as a social worker with the Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education, Charleston, IL. Passionate and committed to her students and her profession, Ms. Hubbell was well respected and highly accomplished. She was a founding member and past president of the Illinois Association of School Social Workers and received the prestigious honor of being named School Social Worker of the Year. She was also a founding member of the School Social Work Association of America. She also belonged to Pegtown Chapter of American Business Women’s Association and Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education Association/Illinois Education Association/National Education Association. Creative and musically talented, Vi enjoyed playing piano, guitar, singing, and attending musical theatre. She was a season ticket holder of The Little Theatre on The Square in Sullivan, IL. Her travel destinations included Hawaii but many times she and her friends’ frequented casinos in Tunica, MS, and St. Charles, MO. She enjoyed playing tennis in her younger years. Throughout her life, Vi was blessed with dear friends along with her canine companions, Beau and Cosette whom she dearly loved. She also remained friends with her ex-husband Bill and visited him often. During his final years, she was instrumental in his healthcare and moving him to Mattoon to be near her. Vi was a charitable woman who donated to several organizations. She made a positive impact on her students and youth providing services and guidance to enhance their development.
