Vera June (Harper) Adams

Vera June (Harper) Adams, age 78 of Mattoon, IL peacefully walked into Heaven with her loving family surrounding her at 7:34 AM, Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL. A funeral service in her honor will be held at 9:00 AM, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Reverend Ian Stamps will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. The visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday evening, July 23, 2024, at the funeral home. Vera was born on August 15, 1945, in Mattoon, IL to the late Ralph D. and Berdina M. (Walker) Harper. She married Darrell L. Adams on April 11, 1980, in Mattoon, IL; he preceded her in death on January 4, 2019. She is survived by two children, Richard K. Epperson and wife Sally of East Wenatchee, WA, Kimberly L. Bitting and husband Sean of Mattoon, IL; four stepchildren: David L. Adams and wife April of Cave Creek, AZ, Steve M. Adams and wife Becky of Cooks Mills, IL, Rick W. Adams and wife Jacklyn of Inverness, FL, Leanne Shain and husband Chuck of Cooks Mills, IL; sixteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Rod Epperson; one brother, Jack Harper; one sister, Chearie Lindsey; and one grandson, Ryan Epperson. Vera was a faithful member of the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon, IL and was active in organizing funeral dinners for the church and has taught bible study. In 2004, she retired from Sears where she worked in Human Resources in Mattoon, IL. Prior to that she worked at JC Penney and RR Donnelley both in Mattoon, IL. With a fun and witty sense of humor, Vera had a knack for finding humor in situations, and an art for storytelling that would leave her audience roaring with laughter. Crafty and creative, she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, ceramics, making stuffed animals and dolls. She took great pleasure in gifting her handmade treasures to her family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking and baking; her pies, cakes, and potato salad were family favorites. Even with a recipe her potato salad will never be duplicated. She always looked forward to playing games and spending time with her loved ones. Kind, generous, and compassionate with a warm heart and beautiful smile, Vera will be lovingly remembered.
