Susan D. Kohn

Susan Denise Kohn, age 59 of Mattoon, IL passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026, at her residence. A funeral service in her honor will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 5, 2026, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue Mattoon, IL 61938. Reverend Richard Eident will officiate. A visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home. Susan was born on December 10, 1966, in Albuquerque, NM to Hugh Ivan and Lois (Solga) Birch. She married Scott David Kohn on May 27, 2011; he survives and resides in Mattoon, IL. She is also survived by her three children: Brandi Brown and husband Andy of Lake City, IL, Kathleen Asbell and husband Seth of Charleston, IL, Ben White and wife Ashley of Hindsboro, IL; two stepchildren, Adam Kohn and wife Kelly of Clinton, IL, Kellye Rosenfield and husband Tyler of Queen Creek, AZ; two brothers, Chuck Birch of Albuquerque, NM, George Birch of Charleston, IL; six grandchildren: Carson Augustine of Charleston, IL, Carter White of Hindsboro, IL, Colt Rosenfield of Queen Creek, AZ, Harrison, Sawyer, and Sloan Kohn of Clinton, IL; many nieces and nephews; her special friends, Rich and Lisa Orr; and her lifelong friend, Kelly Hart. She was preceded in death by her father. Susan graduated from Charleston High School. She spent most of her career as Assistant Director of Dining at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, where she served for many years prior to working as a Home Health Care Scheduler for Sarah Bush Lincoln Home Health Care, where she concluded her career in 2022. She looked forward to enjoying the many plans she had made for retirement and especially cherished traveling to visit family and spending time with those she loved. An avid University of Illinois football fan, Susan loved cheering on the Fighting Illini. She was always on the go, whether tending to her yard, working on a project, or heading out on a Jeep adventure. Her energy and enthusiasm for life were evident in everything she did. Most of all, Susan had a way of lighting up every room she entered. Quick-witted and fun-loving, she loved making others laugh and will be remembered for her warm smile, kind heart, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her life was dedicated to caring for her family and friends, and she dearly loved her grandchildren as well as her great-nephews, Eoin, Liam, and Declan Kohn. She also shared a very special bond with her four-legged “baby,” Moe, her beloved rescue who held a true place in her heart.
