MATTOON-Robert E. Washburn, age 80, of Mattoon, IL passed away 12:00 Noon, July 13, 2013 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL.\r\n\r\nServices celebrating his life will begin at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday July 16, 2013 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Ave., Mattoon, IL 61938 with Reverend Robert Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, IL. Military Rites will be conducted at the graveside by Mattoon VFW Post 4325. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. till Noon on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.\r\n\r\nRobert was born February 21, 1933 in Mattoon, IL, the son of Raymond E. and Olive N. (Burris) Washburn. He married Evelyn J. Goad on March 16, 1958 in Neoga, IL.\r\n\r\nHe is survived by his loving wife Evelyn J. Washburn of Mattoon, IL; one daughter, Deborah Davis and her husband Darrel of Windsor, IL; one son, Rodney E. Washburn and his wife Michelle of New Baden, IL; four grandchildren, Timothy G. Davis and his wife Christine of LeRoy, IL, Derek R. Davis of Arthur, IL, Rachel E. Washburn of New Baden, IL and Megan C. Washburn of New Baden, IL; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Evelyn and Destiny; one brother, Dave McCusker of Charleston, IL and one sister Mary Rich of Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Eugene Washburn and one sister Joyce Miller.\r\n\r\nRobert retired from General Electric in Mattoon, IL in 1998 after 42 years of employment. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict earning the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.\r\n\r\nRobert was a member of the First Christian Church in Mattoon, IL where he served as Deacon. He was a member of the VFW Post 4325 in Mattoon, IL, a creative woodworker leaving several pieces for his family to appreciate, a devoted St. Louis Cardinal and University of Illinois Basketball and football fan. In his earlier years he also enjoyed a day of fishing. The Washburn's recently received the 'Proudly We Hail Award' from the Mattoon, IL Exchange Club for continuous efforts to display the American Flag. However, more than anything, he treasured time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
