Nancy Ann Henry

Nancy Ann Henry passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Odd Fellows and Rebekah Home in Mattoon, Illinois. A Funeral Mass in her honor will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, September 21, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 N. 21st Street, Mattoon, IL 61938. A committal service will immediately follow in Calvary Cemetery. The visitation will be held the same day from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. She was born on May 4, 1946, to William and Florence Henry. She is survived by her sister Patricia (Eugene) Waskowski of Prospect Heights, Illinois, niece Anna Waskowski and nephew Nicholas Waskowski. Nancy graduated from Mattoon High in 1964. Service to others was the hallmark in Nancy's life. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University with a major in English, Nancy taught for over twenty years at Finley Jr. High. She then worked until her retirement at Mattoon Public Library as the Children's librarian, introducing young children to their first reading experiences, leading fun summer reading projects, and helping them with schoolwork and their reading choices. Nancy also maintained the vertical files and helped with Mattoon and Coles County history, as well as delivering books to those who had difficulty getting to the library. Nancy was an avid lifelong reader and enjoyed history, biographies, and sports. Another service project that was important to Nancy was being a bell ringer with the Salvation Army during the Christmas season. She was always concerned with helping others and gave of her time to this organization. Nancy was a devoted and lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church. She supported several ministries within the church and participated with serving funeral dinners as well as the St. Vincent de Paul society. She looked in on those parishioners who could not get to church. Several members were also cared for and taken to church, shopping, out to lunch and any medical needs or appointments. She will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and compassion.
