Michael J. Hagen

Mattoon, IL - Michael J. (Mike) Hagen left this earthly life to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ at 9:40 a.m., on Friday, April 23, 2010, after a faith filled fight against cancer. Mike fought a brave fight against small cell lung cancer and was able to far outlive the prognosis because of all the prayers of his friends and family. He was assured of his place in Heaven because of his sure knowledge of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. \r\n\r\nThe Christian funeral service will be at Faith Lutheran Church in Sullivan, IL, at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 26, 2010 with Reverend Glenn Strohschein officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938. There will be no viewing as the body has been donated to the SIU School of Medicine, as Mike wished. \r\n\r\nMike was born on May 27, 1957 in Decatur, IL to John and Barbara Hagen. He grew up in Sullivan, IL and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1979. He married Margaret Widdersheim on May 24, 1981 at Grace Lutheran Church in Strasburg, IL. They were blessed with two sons, JC and Alex. Mike is survived by his wife, Margaret, his sons, JC and Alex, and his mother, Barbara all of Mattoon, IL; his brothers and their wives, Bill and Judi, and Bob and Cathy, all of Sullivan, IL; and his sister and her husband, Barbie and Alan Brown, of New York. He was preceded in death by his father, John Hagen and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Nina Widdersheim.\r\n \r\nMike spent 29 years in the banking profession. He began his career at First National Bank of Sullivan. He later worked at Security Bank and Trust in Vincennes, Indiana, First Mid Illinois Bank and Trust in Mattoon and ended his career at Shelby County State Bank in Shelbyville. \r\n\r\nWhile living in Sullivan, Mike was active in the Moultrie County United Way, Sullivan Ambucs and Sullivan Jaycees. After moving to Mattoon he coached T-ball, worked with the Mattoon Junior Football League and volunteered for the Mattoon Kids Wrestling club. Mike loved keeping score for the MHS Freshmen and JV home football games. He could be found at any number of MHS sporting events, summer baseball and softball, and loved watching the Fighting Illini, the Cubs and any football game on TV. After cancer forced him to retire from banking, he volunteered at Riddle school, working in first grade classrooms.
