Gladys Myles Cole

Gladys Myles Cole, age 88 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 10:16 AM on Friday, June 26, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. A funeral in her honor will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL; Pastor Brad Brown will officiate. A committal service will follow at Arcola Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until the time of service at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home. Gladys was born on December 5, 1931 in Woodbury, TN, the daughter of the late William Bragg and Cuba Lorraine (Barrett) Higgins. She married Charles “Chuck” Wayne Cole on December 5, 1986 in Mt. Vernon, IL; he passed away on October 27,2019. She is survived by her three children, Steven Pearcy and wife Diann of Oakland, IL, Sandy Lynn Pence and husband John of Roswell, GA, Sally LeAnn Gerrie and husband Lonnie of Ashmore, IL; four grandchildren, Allie Pearcy, Connor Pence and fiancée Leah Quattrochi, Jennifer Finney, Makala Coe and husband Brody; and two great grandchildren, Bella Finney and Evie Grace Fortune. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Ed Higgins; and one sister, Sarah Butler. Gladys graduated from Kansas High School and started Tiny Tot Nursery School. She later retired from General Electric of Mattoon, where she was employed for over thirty-two years. Gladys was a devout member of Family Worship Center and actively involved in various church committees. She was proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Ladies of the Moose in Mattoon. Her hobbies included camping, fishing, and oil painting. However, Gladys’s favorite time was spent with her family and learning about their history and genealogy. She relished in the moments surrounded by her loved ones and showering her children and grandchildren with kindness and compassion. Gladys was fiercely funny and always there to brighten the lives of many. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
