Floyd Douglas “Doug” Hortenstine, age 70 of Winston, GA formerly of Gays, IL passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. A funeral service in his honor will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, May 20, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Pastor Nicholas Brown will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow at Branch Side Cemetery in Gays, IL. The visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Doug was born on June 13, 1953, in Mattoon, IL to the late Paul A. and Hattie F. (Brosam) Hortenstine. He married Martha “Marty” Duzan on April 29, 1973, in Mattoon, IL; she preceded him in death on July 21, 2016. He is survived by two children, Angela L. Rakestraw and husband John of Winston, GA; Ryan D. Hortenstine and wife Jana of Gays, IL; one brother, Paul D. Hortenstine and wife Jacque of Powder Springs, GA; six grandchildren: Elizabeth H. Brown and husband Nicholas of Gays, IL, Olivia C. Hortenstine of Mattoon, IL, James D. Hortenstine and wife Claire of Charleston, IL, Liam D. Hortenstine of Gays, IL Silas P. Hortenstine of Gays, IL , Seth D. Rakestraw of Winston, GA; four great-grandchildren: Adam E. and Wyatt C. L. Brown of Gays, IL, Isaac R. Hutton of Mattoon, IL, Violet L. Hortenstine of Charleston, IL. He was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Powers; and two grandchildren, Dexter Hortenstine and Caleb Rakestraw. Doug was a member of Atlanta West Pentecostal Church in Lithia Springs, GA. In his earlier years he was a Sunday School Teacher. He was a farmer by trade and worked at the Bureau of Land Management, Division of Wild Horses. It was in that capacity that Mr. Hortenstine had the pleasure of meeting Former President George W. Bush while delivering horses to his ranch. With his endless talents and creativity, Doug was an excellent photographer, scrimshaw artist, and landscaped beautiful gardens. He was good at everything he attempted and made it look effortless. He was a collector of many things and loved to travel. Though Doug was taken suddenly, his loving heart was a beacon of light for his family and friends. He will be sorely missed but his legacy of unconditional love will be a comfort.
