Eva Marie Enis

Eva Marie Enis, age 93 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 6:05 PM, Monday, March 23, 2020 at Arbor Rose of Monticello. A graveside service will take place at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL; Reverend Jeremy Doughty will officiate. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services. Eva was born on February 26,1927 in Champaign, IL the daughter of the late Clarence L. and Bernice (Martin) Beasley. She married Vert Enis Jr. on September 4, 1942 in Perryville, MO; he passed away on February 19, 2004. She is survived by four children: Reverend Arlie R. Enis and wife Becki of Cincinnati, OH, LaVaughn Enis of Marion, IL, Vernon G. Enis of Spokane, WA, Duane Enis and wife Judy of Cerro Gordo, IL; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one special grandchild, Amanda Syfert. Eva is preceded in death by one brother. Eva attended The Apostolic Center of Mattoon, IL. In her younger years as a preachers’ wife, Eva was active in her husband’s ministry in Joliet, IL. She was a graduate of St. Francis University of Joliet, IL where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in English and minor in History. Eva then became an English teacher for St. Francis Academy in Joliet, IL. She later attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL receiving her master’s degree in English. Eva retired as an English professor from Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL. Eva and her late husband, Vert, were the owners and operators of Eva’s Pla Mor Golf at Peterson Park in Mattoon. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Lambda Iota Tau Society (International Literature Honor Society), Eastern Illinois University Alumni Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Mattoon Women’s Reading Club and the University of St. Francis Alumni Association. Eva was an avid reader with an extensive library collection. She enjoyed learning and traveling all over the world, including Israel, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. She lived a life full of adventures and experiences, touching the lives of many. She will be greatly remembered.
