Donald "Donnie" Ray Young

Donald “Donnie” Ray Young, age 84 of Mattoon, IL passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Odd Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL. A visitation in his honor will be held from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Donnie was born on August 17, 1939, to the late Wilber and Eula (Moore) Young in Platteville, WI. Eula later married Ralph Kramer, who Donnie referred to as “Pop”. He is survived by his three children: Jeff Young and wife Dagmar of Milford, KS., John Young and wife Kathy of Lemont, IL., and Jennifer Herrington and husband Coey of Charleston, IL; eight grandchildren: Daniel Korp and wife Carrie of Milford, KS., Sascha Korp and wife Mikaela of Wiesau, Germany., Lucas Young of Frisco, TX., Joshua Young of Chicago, IL., Lauren Terrazas and husband Jake of Scottsdale, AZ., Caleb Young of Scottsdale, AZ., Dane and Shelby Herrington of Charleston, IL., seven great-grandchildren: Madison Korp, Lorelei Korp, Carson Young, Collin Young, Camden Young, Jayden Thomas Korp and Louis Korp. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and stepfather. In 1957, Donnie graduated from Roodhouse High School in Roodhouse, IL. He went on to further his education at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Education. In 1964 he began his teaching career at Mattoon High School and taught P.E. and Health his first year and then Drivers Education until he retired in 1994. He also taught motorcycle safety classes at EIU and took a year off to teach police defensive techniques. He was a former member of the Mattoon Eagle’s Club and the Mattoon Moose Lodge of Mattoon, IL. Donnie loved to play golf and ride his Harley. He was a die-hard Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He made it a point to go to his favorite bar, Spanky’s, daily to see his friends, share stories and laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
