Delbert Lee Moncel

Delbert Lee Moncel died November 23, 2006 at Mattoon Health Care, Mattoon, Illinois, after a long and hard-fought battle with renal cancer. Delbert was born September 30, 1936 in Jasper County, Illinois, son of Leslie and Elma (Stark) Moncel. He was a graduate of Newton High School and Eastern Illinois University, where he received his Masters Degree, and was a proud member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. \r\n\r\nDelbert married Madonna Ritter on June 7, 1959 in Mattoon, Illinois. He is survived by his wife Madonna of Mattoon; his daughter Mindy of Mattoon; two sons, Mitchell and wife Lois of Mundelein, Illinois, and Michael and his wife Kristin of Mattoon, Illinois; three grandchildren, Madison of Mundelein, Illinois, Brock and Gibson of Mattoon, Illinois. Delbert is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Martha Crookshank, Sonny and Myrt Ritter, Irvin Ritter and Gary Ritter of Decatur, Illinois, Larry and Judy Ritter of Mattoon, and Larry and Judy Stewart of Rantoul, Illinois, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his two 'adopted' daughters, Gail Bahney and Brenda Smith. \r\n\r\nDelbert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gerald Moncel; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Kathleen Phalen, and several nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. \r\n\r\nDelbert taught Vocational Building Trades at Mattoon High School for six years and was a building contractor for over 30 years. He then worked for Ameren- CIPS for 11 years as a Building Construction Supervisor, retiring in 2003. Following retirement he worked part time as a supervisor for Drake Homes.\r\n\r\nDelbert was a member of the First Christian Church of Mattoon, where he served as Deacon and past Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Illinois Army Reserves from 1958 to 1963. He was a long time member of the Mattoon Jaycees, having received a JCI Senatorship, and was a member of the Moose, the Mattoon Exchange Club and Charleston Country Club. \r\n\r\nDelbert was a truly a 'people' person and rarely saw a stranger. He loved building and was very proud of the many homes and businesses he had the privilege to build. He enjoyed dancing and bowling, but his great passion was golf and he spent much time on the golf course. Most of all, Delbert enjoyed being a father and grandfather and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. \r\n\r\nFuneral Services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 27, 2006 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Reverend Mark Prevo officiating. Interment will be at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home. \r\n\r\nMemorials may be made to American Cancer Society or First Christian Church Building Fund.
