Charles Leslie "Les" Sorensen

Charles Leslie “Les” Sorensen, age 89 of Cooks Mills, IL went to be with his Lord and Savior at 11:00 PM, Thursday, February 8, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his family. A funeral service in his honor will be held at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Pastor Paul Weber will officiate. A committal will immediately follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cooks Mills, IL. The visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home. Les was born on December 23, 1934, in Mattoon, IL to the late Karl H. and Osie (Icenogle) Sorensen. He married Patricia L. Adams on March 17, 1957, in Cooks Mills, IL; she survives and resides in Cooks Mills, IL. He is also survived by three children: Mark A. Sorensen and wife Michele of Lake Havasu, AZ, E. Gay Borntrager and husband Freeman of Cooks Mills, IL, Dana R. Sorensen and wife Tina of Pesotum, IL; nine grandchildren: Amber Schroeder and husband Bill of Pueblo, CO, Samantha Sorensen of Lynchburg, VA, Victoria Sorensen of Flagstaff, AZ, Tyler Borntrager of Danville, IL, Alex Borntrager of Cooks Mills, IL, Shanon Borntrager and wife Shannon of Mt. Zion, IL, Brandon Sorensen of Atwood, IL, Myles Sorensen of Champaign, IL, Zoey Sorensen of Pesotum, IL; six great-grandchildren: Cody and Savannah Schroeder, Aralynn Johnson, Ayla and Baylor Borntrager, and Maddox Sorensen. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Glenn, Bobby, and David Sorensen. Mr. Sorensen was a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserve and National Guard. In 2000 he retired from Libman Broom Company in Arcola, IL. Prior to that he worked at Associated Spring in Mattoon, IL. He was a longtime and faithful member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Cooks Mills, IL, and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Mattoon, IL and the Illinois Trappers Association. Throughout his lifetime, Les remained active. He enjoyed bowling league in the 1960’s, playing baseball in Texas, fur trapping, camping, riding his bicycle across Illinois and the Katy Trail in Missouri, square dancing with his wife Pat, and canoeing down the Kaskaskia River with his grandchildren. Exhibiting the heart of a true servant, Les was a member of the Disaster Relief Team of Springfield, IL. He and Pat volunteered at the Mattoon Community Food Center, and they traveled to the Appalachian’s to take food, clothing, and supplies to those in need. Having a close relationship with his family and bonding over numerous activities and get-togethers, Les leaves many heartfelt memories. As a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend he will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered. Memorials in his honor may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O.
