Brian J. Sutherland, age 54 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 2:58 PM, Friday, April 7, 2023, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. A funeral service in his honor will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 14, 2023, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Pastor Don Pankey will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow at Janesville Cemetery in Janesville, IL. The visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the funeral home. The family requests those attending the funeral service to dress casual in Chicago Cubs or concert attire. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Spanky’s Food & Spirits, 1920 Oak Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Brian was born March 8, 1969, in Charleston, IL to Donald J. and Patricia R. (Swearingen) Sutherland. He is survived by his parents of Lerna, IL; one sister, Lisa A. Skief and husband Bart of Lerna, IL; two nieces, Paris and Ciarra; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, two uncles, and one aunt. Brian was employed as a welder at Bulk Tek in Arcola, IL. He was a member of the He-Man Women Haters Club of Coles County, IL, and Hodgkin’s-Lymphoma Surgery Survivors Club. A thirty-six-year survivor of Hodgkin’s-Lymphoma, Brian did not take life for granted, he enjoyed every moment. His passion for music and attending concerts was parallel to his undying love for the Chicago Cubs. His gentle soul, sincere kindness, sense of humor, and the way he embraced his family and friends will be remembered most. His life was meaningful, he was a friend to all, and left a great impact on those who knew and loved him.
