Billy "Bill" Gene Standerfer Jr., 76 of Mattoon, IL passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. A Celebration of Life honoring Bill will be held at his business, Standerfer Construction, 3020 Lake Land Blvd., Mattoon, IL on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 1:00 pm -3:00 pm. The service will begin with the reading of Bill's obituary, a few words of remembrance, and followed by an opportunity for family and friends to share memories. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of arrangements. Bill was born on January 5, 1950, in Decatur, IL to the late Billy Gene Sr. and Joyce (Woolridge) Standerfer. Bill married Virginia A. Lowe (Bolin) on December 21, 2004, in Charleston, IL; she survives and resides in Mattoon, IL. He is also survived by his two daughters Heather Warf and husband Darin of Mattoon, IL, Hilary Smith and husband Mark of Mattoon, IL; stepson, Chad Bolin and wife Jill of Avon, IN, stepdaughter, Michelle Bolin and husband Craig Iberg of Sullivan, IL; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great -grandchildren; brothers, Jim Standerfer and wife Julie of Sullivan, IL, John Standerfer and wife Jenna of Sullivan, IL, Jeff Standerfer of Shelbyville, IL, and one brother-in-law, Tom Pope and wife Amy of Kentucky. He was preceded in death by one infant brother, David Standerfer and one sister, Sue Pope. Bill was a hardworking and dedicated businessman who took great pride in serving his community. He was owner and operator of Standerfer Construction Inc. for over fifty years, Standerfer Properties and Standerfer Estates Rentals. He built not only successful businesses but lasting relationships all while teaching Dale Carnegie, training, encouraging and inspiring others to reach their potential. Before entering construction, he graduated with his teaching degree from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL and began utilizing his love for learning as a math teacher at the Mattoon Schools while coaching and refereeing basketball. While attending Sullivan Schools he was inducted into the National Honor Society, played basketball, football, track and worked at the local grocery store. A man of community spirit and strong faith, Bill was a church member and devoted much of his time to organizations. As high school class president of Sullivan, IL from 1968-2026, he was essential in starting the Sullivan Scholarship Fund for high school underclassmen. He was active with the Rotary Club of Mattoon, the Coles County Landlord Association, the Board of Education for Mattoon Community School District #2, the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, the Mattoon Eagles Club, the Mattoon VFW, and Mattoon Public Works Advisory Board. Above all, Bill treasured time with family. Some of his happiest moments were spent together at the family cabin on Lake Mattoon, where countless memories were made and will continue to be cherished for years to come. Bill's legacy of hard work, service, faith, and love of his family will be remembered by all who were blessed to have known him. He may not be where we are, but he will be with us wherever we go.
