Tomey W. Long

Tomey W. Long, age 91 of Charleston, IL passed away peacefully Friday evening, May 24, 2024, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL. A funeral service in his honor will be held at 10:00 AM. Friday, May 31, 2024, at Broadway Christian Church, 1205 S. 9th Street, Mattoon, IL 61938; Pastor Ian Stamps will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow in Dodge Grove Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services. Tomey was born on April 14, 1933, in Harbor Spring, AR to the late Lester E. and Gracie P. (Davis) Long. He married Trois C. Lee (O’Dell) on March 6, 1976, in Mattoon, IL. He is survived by his wife Trois Long of Charleston, IL; son, Terry L. Long and wife Toni of Utica, KY; daughter, Debra S. Huffman of Ft. Myers, FL, son, Mark T. O’Dell and wife Denise of Charleston, IL; eight grandchildren; Chad Long, Danny Long, Dana Long, Brian Huffman, Sara Huffman, Brittany Massa (O’Dell), Megan O’Dell, and Allyson O’Dell; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Long and wife Lynn of Jonesboro, AR, Mitchell Long of Alma, AR; and two sisters, Zora Hicks of Mattoon, IL, and Cora Norman and husband Don of Marion, AR. Tomey is preceded in death by his son, Danny Long; three brothers, four sisters, and one son-in-law. Tomey was the founder and owner of Commercial Electric, Inc. in Mattoon, IL. He was a true leader with his admirable values and a work ethic that has led to the success of the company for the next two generations. He belonged to IBEW Local 146 Decatur, IL and was a devoted member of Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon, IL. Tomey was an avid sportsman who rooted for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears. Never one to miss a round of golf, Tomey spent many hours on the course at Mattoon Golf and Country Club, where he was a longtime member. He and his wife loved to spend their winters at their home in Ocala, FL.
