L. Wayne Moore
Mattoon, IL – L. Wayne Moore, age 82, of Mattoon, IL, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2011, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL.
The funeral service in his honor will begin at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, 10 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938. Reverend Art Woolverton will officiate. Visitation will be from noon until the service begins. Entombment will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery Mausoleum. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born September 25, 1928, in Danville, IL, Wayne was the son of C. Lloyd and Lillian (Buckler) Moore, both now deceased. He is survived by his special companion, Judy Kepp of Neoga, IL; three children, Beverly Kamnick and husband Tony of Winston-Salem, NC, David Moore and wife Betsy of Chicago, IL, and Debbie Moore and husband Kelly Pixton of San Diego, CA; one sister, Jane Stalder of Denver CO; two grandchildren, Gabriel Sanders and wife Laura of St. Charles, IL, and William Kamnick of Winston-Salem, NC; and two great grandchildren, Garrett and Gretchen Sanders of St. Charles, IL.
Mr. Moore served our country with the United States Airforce as a combat bomber pilot during the Korean War. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management, and in 1972, earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration from Eastern Illinois University.
Digging ditches for his dad, C. Lloyd Moore, a home builder, was the beginning and foundation of Wayne’s career. For more than 50 years Wayne was involved in one aspect or another of building homes or real estate. He developed areas of Mattoon such as Pine Acres Subdivision, Crestview Subdivision, and Southlawn and Moore additions. He later spent more than two decades with Coldwell Banker Real Estate, where he became co-owner and served as managing broker of the Mattoon office. He was deemed “the wise-old owl” of the business by his partners.
Wayne grew up in Mattoon and built his dream house on Lake Mattoon 39 years ago. He finally retired in 2003, at the age of 75. He spent his last eight years relaxing and enjoying life with his companion Judy, who has become a cherished member of his family. One of his favorite past times was golf with his buddies at the Mattoon Golf and Country Club. His other memberships included the Mattoon Moose Lodge 803, VFW Post 4326, and American Legion Post 88.
Wayne was a loveable gentleman with a dry wit and a big heart. He was a loving father and grandfather who took care of his family and always made each of them feel special. He will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Memorials in his honor may be made to the Korean War Veterans Association, PO Box 407, Charleston, IL 61920.
